Lost in the Ribera district
Algunos lo llaman el «MontMatre barcelonés»…. Some call it the «MontMatre in Barcelona»…..
Es un placer dejarse perder por alguno de los barrios antiguos de Barcelona. El barrio del Raval, el Gótico y el de la Ribera, son mis preferidos.
La Ribera ha vivido todo tipo de esplendores y desventuras, pero mantiene intacto su encanto medieval y esconde obras maestras de la arquitectura. Es hoy el barrio más bohemio de Barcelona, lleno de sorpresas y lugares por descubrir.
Muchos artistas han instalado aquí sus talleres, heredando así la tradición de la zona en la que vivían los artesanos de la ciudad. Muchos de los nombres de las calles nos recuerdan hoy aquellos viejos oficios y gremios: Mirallers (espejeros), Sombrerers (sombrereros), Argenters (plateros)…, calles nacidas en las inmediaciones de la Basílica de Santa María del Mar, sin ningún lugar a dudas la obra maestra del gótico catalán.
Ahora, entre las antiguas piedras de la Ribera se exhiben restaurantes, locales nocturnos y tiendas de moda, llenando de color un barrio viejo pero de belleza renovada.
It is a pleasure to be losing any of the old districts of Barcelona. The District of Raval, Gothic and Rivera, are my favorite.
Ribera district has experienced all sorts of splendors and misadventures, but keeps intact its medieval charm and hidden masterpieces of architecture. It is today the most bohemian district of Barcelona, full of surprises and places to discover.
Many artists have installed their workshops here, inheriting the tradition of the area where they lived the artisans of the city. Many of the street names remind us today those old trades and guilds: Mirallers (mirror makers), Sombrerers (hatters), Argenters (silversmiths) … streets born in the vicinity of the Santa Maria del Mar, with nowhere to doubt the masterpiece of Catalan Gothic.
Now, among the ancient stones of Ribera, there are restaurants, nightclubs and boutiques are on display, color filling an old but renovated neighborhood beauty.

Wow! These photographs are really fantastic. I have looked at them one by one with open mouth! The last picture reminded me of something I heard long time ago. I was in Granada a fortnight ago and when I saw blind people begging for money the following expression came to my mind: «Dale limosna mujer, que no hay en la vida nada como le pena de ser ciego en Granada». It hits the nail on the head. Beautiful, impressive city but unfortunately too many beggars (and robbers). My favorite photos are nrs. 14, 15, 16, 22 and 24. Real beauties. Question: MontMatre barcelonés….the equivalent of Mont Martre in Paris? Or is it some Spanish barrio I’ve never heard of?
The Montmartre district does not exist in Barcelona. People «calls him» well, compared with Paris, because it is a bohemian neighborhood where many artists have installed their workshops.
