Suddenly he interrupted my reading……        Súbitamente interrumpió mi lectura ……

Súbitamente interrumpió mi lectura al aterrizar frente a la mesa del jardín este misterioso animal.
Se me quedó mirando con esos grandes y abultados ojos, sin comprender que clase de animal era yo.

Pobre, no sabía con quien se había tropezado!

Rápidamente y con cuidado logré introducirla en una caja de cartón y sin perder ni un segundo me apresuré a recoger mi cámara y un vaporizador de éter que utilizo a veces para adormilar y fotografiar insectos.

El resultado son estas fotos.

Luego, después de posar varias veces para mí, pensó que ya estaba abusando de ella y, tal como vino,  se marchó.

Le estaré eternamente agradecido!

Las mantis son animales solitarios, excepto en la época de reproducción, cuando macho y hembra se buscan para aparearse, cuando hay más de un macho cerca de una hembra, éstos se pelean y sólo uno se reproduce. El apareamiento dura unas dos horas, pero puede alcanzar hasta tres. Por lo general, la hembra se come al macho durante o después del apareamiento, lo decapita y devora inmediatamente.

The mantis are solitary animals, except in the breeding season, when male and female looking to mate, when there is more than one male near a female, they fight and only one is playing. Por lo que parece que está rezando, a la espera de que una presa se acerque. Cuando otro insecto se posa junto a ella, lo observa girando la cabeza y lanzándose al ataque de inmediato.
Esta acción dura una décima de segundo. Sus patas delanteras sujetan a la víctima y la mantis comienza a alimentarse de ella inmediatamente, incluso si su presa sigue luchando para escapar. Sólo come las presas que caza ella misma, orugas, mariposas, arañas, grillos, saltamontes, polillas, hormigas, moscas etc.

Son reinas del camuflaje. La mantis religiosa es muy hábil a la hora de camuflarse de sus presas, las especies que viven en el suelo se suelen camuflar de color marrón, mientras que las que viven en las hojas y en las copas de los árboles lo hacen de verde.

Las ninfas (crías de mantis) nada más nacer comen otras mantis recién salidas del huevo. Las mantis religiosas no tienen el estado de gusano o larva cuando nacen sino que sus crías son réplicas en miniatura de los adultos pero sin alas.

The nymphs (baby mantis) at birth eat other newly hatched mantis. Praying mantises do not have the status of worm or larva at birth but their offspring are miniature replicas of the adults without wings.
